"In a time when freedom of expression is under threat, just about any kind of art feels political in its own way," write the team at @ArtNews in the intro to their list of the defining artworks of the year. Here's what they selected, including "Un coro de yicas" (A chorus of yicas), which celebrates the work of Indigenous women, Heji Shin's cover for Lorde's "Virgin" album, and Kara Walker's "Unmanned Drone, about which Maximilíano Durón says: "She shows how the building blocks of racist historical narratives can appear too large to dismantle but, in fact, can be slowly unraveled to expose the lies beneath."
