I got a manuscript critique of my first book. It was a wise choice because she counted I think 114 characters... in a YA epic fantasy ๐. And had advice on merging characters with similar personalities and plot roles, which greatly helped get my cast down to a manageable size, as did culling minor named characters who only appeared once.
@ElisesWritings Don't feel bad. I read a story for someone a decade ago and she introduced 18 named characters in the first chapter who were all supposed to be main characters. That was just the beginning...
@CA_Hawthorne yikes! I've never had that many main characters, though I've probably written at least one chapter one with that many named characters in it. I've had fun writing chapters in a way where it makes story logic sense to stagger the character intros -even when they're re-intros- for my trilogy, as its ultimately still a decent sized cast.
