I'm restarting my new/favourite #HarryPotter #Fanfic thread here, since #BirdSite is well, that... Let's start with this incredible thing, which is keeping me so engrossed that I cannot put it down, other than to type this. I will add to the thread with subsequent reads, and perhaps some old favourites.
Title: Don't Be Stupid
Author:
Lynskiwrites
summary:
When Harry Potter was 8, Severus took him from the Dursleys, but never stopped hating and mistreating him. The time has come for Severus to learn the consequences of his choices.
Title: Harry Potter Dune not Dumbledore
Summary: Fate is often described as a weave, your own will no more than the choice of which threads to tangle yourself upon as you are woven by hands unseen, and forces undreamed to ends that care not for your want, will, or personal survival. Sometimes however, time turns like the pages of a book. Fate walks cautiously around libraries, but it does not always walk carefully enough around
@kaveinthran @cachondo Replying to a thread I started with things I really enjoy. This goes back to 2023.
@FreakyFwoof @cachondo Thanks, very useful
@FreakyFwoof Yeah. And based on the first three chapters (I've already read them all) it's going to be a banger.
@FreakyFwoof lol, erm, that's quite the summary
@MayDay @FreakyFwoof like I told Andre, it looked more like a poem or something rather than a summary.
@JamminJerry @MayDay Just wait till you read the thing. it is extremely good writing.
@FreakyFwoof @JamminJerry @MayDay Yep, it's fantastic, and the author is putting out chapters fast. Can't wait for more of this.
@BorrisInABox @FreakyFwoof @JamminJerry @MayDay I'm loving this so far after reading two chapters. Great writing.
@ppatel @BorrisInABox @JamminJerry @MayDay There's three.
@FreakyFwoof @BorrisInABox @JamminJerry @MayDay Yes. I had to stop because of family.
@BorrisInABox I know it is. This author is just cool!
@FreakyFwoof I always appreciate AO3 links because downloading them onto my phone is only a few taps. Which device/app do you use to read these days?
@FreakyFwoof That's very early 2000's of you. Does being tethered to the computer ever get annoying?
@simon No, because I read with Orpheus and only Orpheus. I always have a laptop with me and when I don't, I just watch youtube/listen to podcasts instead. It is just how I do things.
@FreakyFwoof Makes sense. Have you thought about trying to hack something together to generate audio? Or do you just not particularly care? I've had a portable reader of some kind for so long that it's hard to imagine not having one.
@FreakyFwoof @simon hah :) I kinda feel like I'm hearing myself talking here. I don't read with Orpheus, but my computer practically IS all I really read on, as well. I use my phone for things when Ihave to but given everything I do is 20 times faster on a computer, I tendto avoid if at all possible, rather just use a laptop
@zersiax @FreakyFwoof @simon I read at a computer for many years, probably because I used a scanner to get book pages into it to begin with.
But having a child to carry about and spending months traveling day arfter day for job interviews meant I couldn't work in that way anymore. Even when I'd take a laptop on the bus or whatever, having a single earbud in and a device I could pause and resume within seconds became incredible.
at nearly 800 wpm I'd get a chapter done while my daughter was using the toilet sometimes, or if I was waiting for a train connection etc without having to pull anything out of a bag.
@cachondo @zersiax @FreakyFwoof @simon I wonder how can we calculate our reading speed using screen reader, like 800 wpm
@kaveinthran well @FreakyFwoof gave us the nifty soundWave: Faster-than-realtime text-to-audio renderer. So you can just dump out a set number of words using that and see how long the file is, I suppose.
@cachondo @kaveinthran Please be warned it is very, very buggy right now and no matter what I do it's being a pain to diagnose why, but if you want a laugh, use BeSTSpeech and have it render a file. The results are staggeringly fast.
@simon I've asked and asked if anyone can do this, I can't. I even wondered why there isn't an NVDA addon that does exactly this and could do so offline and not in realtime but apparently that was a stupid suggestion, so I left it.
@FreakyFwoof @simon wow, an add-on to generate audio out of text would be cool
@kaveinthran @simon Well I kind of just did that after so long of wanting it, it's called Soundwave. It's not working very well yet but it's there for people to test.
