"Maybe" = hypothetical
"Maybe" followed by hyperbole = rhetorical hypothetical

We wouldn't. It's good that that was stopped, but the US failed to learn from it.

I mean, WW2 has also lead to some good things: a strong rejection of racism and an attempt at an international rule based order through the UN, instead of "might makes right". But more than 6 million people would have strongly disagreed that it's worth the cost.

We need to learn from our mistakes before they get out of hand. We need to recognise them before we make them. We need the finally learn from history.
