Geheel eens met de (harde) kritiek van Eric Smit op de ACM.
De ACM gaat over meer dan concurrentie alleen:
'De ACM is een onafhankelijke toezichthouder. Wij bewaken de concurrentie,beschermen consumentenbelangen en reguleren specifieke sectoren, zoals energie, telecom, vervoer en post.'
Daarmee opent de ACM bij hun 'missie en taken'.

We starten een onderzoek naar een IT-bedrijf. We vermoeden dat dit bedrijf afspraken heeft gemaakt met andere bedrijven om elkaars medewerkers niet actief te benaderen of in dienst te nemen. Door dit soort afspraken kunnen werknemers minder makkelijk van baan wisselen. Dat leidt tot lagere lonen of minder goede arbeidsvoorwaarden voor werknemers.⤵️

Verschillende indicatoren wijzen op een afname van de concurrentie in Nederland in de afgelopen 10 jaar. Dat blijkt uit de ‘Staat van de Markt’, een nieuw jaarlijks rapport van de ACM. Afname van concurrentie is zorgwekkend. Minder concurrentie gaat ten koste van prijzen, kwaliteit en innovatie. Het gaat ook ten koste van de weerbaarheid van de samenleving

I’ve grumbled about the ludicrous price of conferences a lot recently. To put this in perspective:
I am off to a Dagstuhl seminar soon. The total cost of attending this three-day event (train to the airport, flight, taxi to the venue in the middle of nowhere, food, accommodation, and attendance) is less than just the registration fee for SOSP last year and EuroLLVM this year. And I expect to get far more out of it than either.
Last year I taught at a week-long summer school (PLISS). If I had paid the registration fee, the total cost of attending would have been slightly more than the cost of registration for either of the other events.
But both of those events are bigger! Yes, but does that make them more useful? I don’t have time to talk to most of the attendees and so much of the program is full of talks that could have been prerecorded videos (which I could watch without travelling) that the actual face-to-face time with other people is smaller.
Computer science really needs to rethink the ‘spend huge amounts of money going to massive conferences’ model. It excludes people who aren’t backed by well-funded institutions. And the value for attendees is quite low (far lower than for a lot of more focused smaller events).
Minor (but frequent) annoyance: Is there any good reason to have such "summary pages" in front of every article other than as an ad? I think they are new in the #ACM DL (?)
The first thing I do with every pdf is to delete that page. It's already annoying on researchgate, but at least they allow authors to deactivate this for their own articles. ACM does not.
I don't know, this gives basic information about the paper on the first page of the pdf... which it would also provide without it?

So as far as I can see, this is a benefit at least for readers who will be able to access all papers etc. freely from that date onward.

Heute hat die Arbeitsgruppe #ScienceTracking des AWBI der @dfg_public in einem Webinar abschließende Ergebnisse zum Thema #Datentracking in der #Wissenschaft vorgestellt. Das Paper dazu wird vrstl. im Q3/2024 in DE und EN veröffentlicht. Es ging hierbei speziell um die Beantwortung der Frage: "Stehen #Bibliotheken in der Mitverantwortung für mögliche Datenschutzverletzungen oder Verletzungen der informationellen Selbstbestimmung?" Dazu wurde ein Rechtsgutachten zum Thema "Datenschutzrechtliche Anforderungen im Rahmen des DEAL-Projektes" eingeholt, die wesentlichen Ergebnisse sind auf der Folie im Screenshot zu sehen. Diese wurden im Anschluss durch einen Anwalt der Rechtsanwaltskanzlei erläutert. Auf Basis der DEAL-Verhandlungsergebnisse konnten so allgemeine Musterformulierungen für Lizenzverträge erarbeitet werden.
Ebenso wurde eine IT-forensische Untersuchung zum "Webtracking durch Wissenschaftsverlage" vorgestellt, die bereits als Paper verfügbar ist und dabei #ACM, #Elsevier, #IEEE und #SpringerNature Macmillan Education untersucht: https://www.thinkmind.org/index.php?view=article&articleid=securware_2023_1_150_30092.
Die Arbeit am Thema wird nun in der Allianz im Schwerpunkt "Digitalität" weitergeführt, hierbei sollen z. B. Zertifizierung oder auch das Datentracking durch andere Publikationsplattformen und auch Dienste wie #ORCID behandelt werden. Darüber hinaus wird das Thema durch die DFG international weitergetragen. Bibliotheken wurden zur Selbstorganisation hinsichtlich weiterer Maßnahmen gegen Datentracking aufgerufen.
