#amreading Turns of Fate by Anne Bishop and its really long and weird (Wyrd) and I like it! Halfway through, semi-hostage teen is in a safe place and fulfilling a geeky fantasy (interacting with llama-like families).

Started listening to a horror novel set in Jim Crow Florida, and I’m so tense and frightened before a single supernatural event has occurred! Because of course, it’s by Tananarive Due. She knows precisely what she’s doing, and what a landscape of terror she is writing about.
(The novel is The Reformatory, 2023, and it opens with a dedication to her great-uncle who died at a Florida reform school, whose name is also the first protagonist’s.)

Had a great Sunday reading time. Read through Cage of Eden volume 1, Fist of the anorth star Perfect Edition volume 7 and Eden - It's an endless word Master Edition volume 1.
Cage of Eden grabbed me in the first volume even though there's way too much fanservice.
Fist of the North Star is always a decent read with some impressive art.
Eden is a blast. I read a few volumes back when it was first published in Germany over 20 years ago and I think I didn't really appreciate it back then. Now it's super enjoyable.
The new week starts with Golden Kamuy volume 17!
"While my bowl is still half full,
you can eat out of it too,
and when it is empty,
just bury it out in the flowers."
#SundaySentence and #TodaysPoem is from Braided Creek by Ted Kooser and Jim Harrison, perfect gift from a friend and former colleague.

So, I just finished reading DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver. It was utterly unputdownable, I got mad at my family for speaking to me while I was reading it, and when I read the final sentence and closed the book all I could say was "DAMN."
Highly recommend, y'all. HIGHEST OF HIGHLY.

Hello! Here's a small #introduction. 📚
I'm using this account to track my reading. I plan to write down some of my thoughts after I finish a book, mostly for my own memory, but hopefully you'll find some interesting reads here too.
I read almost every genre, from any country, about anything that piques my interest. My favorite reads are often memoirs and speculative fiction. Disability lit holds a special place in my heart, and I'm passionate about books in translation.
I care a lot about the ongoing pandemic, so please #MaskUp and recommend me some good plague books!

I love finding new books I enjoy because of my Masto feed! This is an example of one. It's a short story collection that consists of five stories that are on the longer side.
The writing is very lyrical. At first I feared that it wasn't for me, but after giving myself some pages to learn to float along in the river that is this writing style, I was engrossed. I could easily picture every scene. Some of the similes were so unique yet fitting that I had to look up and let it sink in for a while, thinking: yes, that's exactly it, that's a perfect description.
Every story is about a completely different protagonist, in a different part of the world, in a different decade! How does an author have that much range in her writing? I think that's so impressive. I really enjoyed the variety in settings.
As much as these tales differ from each other, they also have overlap in themes. What sprang out to me the most was resilience after trauma, and learning to trust enough to form a bond with someone closely (whether that be a friend, a family member or a potential romantic partner). Opening a door that was rightfully closed to let someone in again. Accepting how incredibly difficult that can be, even just to trust yourself with that process.
If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go for the second story (called Heatstroke). I liked all of the stories though, even when the angst got to be a little too much for me personally, haha. I hope the author will bring out another collection in the future.
A challenge for bookworms of the Fedi:
I remember reading a book, about thirty years ago, which was as far as I recall a sword-&-sorcery type fantasy novel in which the main character was a man who had as companion and familiar, a raven. Now, this would have passed uncommented on, except that at about the time I was reading the book, I met a raven at a bird sanctuary, and it was enormous!
I've a vague desire to read the book again, and I can't remember the title, the author, or even the character's name. Not even the raven's name.
Does it ring any bells?
Boosts welcome, if you are happy to do so!

Looking for some soft, comfy reading to ring out this hard old year? You're sure to find something delightful in my whimsical fantasy story collection. Elves, gargoyles, mischievous young magicians, heroic aunties, brave doggo, and much more.
