Great article by Cory Doctorow about "AI" and writing.
The points it makes are two. The first is that students using "AI" to write is a structural problem, not a lack-of-virtue problem. Big tech and teachers put the students in a position where they *almost* can't not use "AI" in some capacity. (1/2)

So, two revelations about my book in the last two days.
First, I actually made myself read some of my first draft yesterday, and it's not nearly as janky and disjointed as I'd feared. I don't in fact have to rewrite it from scratch, thank baby Superman. (I got halfway through it about a year ago and was so horrified that I haven't touched it since, but I think I'm finally ready to get back in.)

So all this AI/LLM shit? There's no way I could have even remotely prompted my way to or through this novel. It emerged from exploration & dreams & letting my subconscious drive the bus. Deeply learning who my characters were & trusting them to tell me when I'd gotten it right.
I'm at 65.5K & the climax event just revealed itself to me. Almost as if it was always there, but needed to be excavated at the right time.
This is the magic. Right here. I am so excited for this book.

Struggling with story structure atm.
Rethinking the structure of The Big Novel, and realising I don't know what I'm trying to *say* with it.
Do I need to actually say anything? Can it just be a neat idea?
*wails* "But what if there is no theme?"

🇨🇦Introduction Appendix 3: This project will be a bit less socially minded, more just creative, and hopefully even a little lucrative, but I'm not holding my breath.
That's right, I'm writing a novel. I know that novelists are a dime a dozen, but I actually really enjoy writing, think that I'm fairly decent at it, and certainly have no shortage of ideas. There will be sequels, many of them (and prequels, and side stories...).
So what's it about? It's science fiction, because that's what I know and like best. The basic idea is the well-known "lost in space" idea, but I'm hoping that the unique setting, characters, and story are able to carry it. It takes place in an alternate history where the United States, Canada, and Mexico joined together to form a Technate, a country that employs Technocracy (see my Intro Appendix 1), not long after World War 2. Technological progress happens much faster until the start of the novel, where we find our crew of four performing a test flight of a prototype fusion rocket engine. Naturally, something goes horribly wrong and... science fiction weirdness ensues as the crew has to try and find their way back to Earth while navigating several strange (and often hostile) alien civilizations.
The background and setting are fairly detailed, enough that I already have ideas for prequels and side stories in addition to the main series. "Epic" world building appears to be my jam. Now we just have to see if anyone else happens to like it.

TFW you research a horrendously complex topic with many different but interlinking strands, and it begins to dawn on you that you might finally have managed to construct a chapter outline that flows in a sensible, linear fashion from start to finish.
…And then TFW you realise all you have to do now is write the damn thing!
I'm about 60% done with the first draft of my second novel, Shallow Trenches/Open Skies.
It's a scifi/World War I epic with a dash of body horror and alien invasion for flavor.
