Happy to report that about a year after getting a mate to communicate using Signal instead of WhatsApp, we just today made the progression to securing our emails via pgp. 🥳

He was already using Thunderbird as his email client, and although just a few clicks it was a James Bond meets Bill Gates moment when we sent and received encrypted, signed emails to one another. 🤓

[Per the #anarchist theory of practice] I remain convinced this practice of changing how we behave on the internet with intention will continue to change the people engaging in it. Digital prefigurative politics, nibbling away at surveillance capitalism one little data set at a time.

I have a Ph.D. in Human Science (2016, Saybrook University), which is about the experience of being human in social contexts. It is the mother of the social sciences but is now, at least in the English speaking world, and at least as far as I can tell, a dead field.

I studied #conservatism for my #dissertation. And yes, the #Democrats are far too #conservative for me.

Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a computer programmer. It was the wrong career choice.

I am a #vegan #LibertarianSocialist (recovering #anarchist) mostly from the #SanFrancisco #BayArea in #California, presently residing in #Pittsburgh, #Pennsylvania, hoping to move to #erie

In #kyriarchy, I mostly focus on #classism and #ageism, but since arriving in Pittsburgh, have been confronted with blatant #racism (and yes, many white people here do see it). But #SocialJustice has to be for everybody; to focus on any one identity, to the exclusion of others, is nothing more than to elevate that identity over that of the predominantly wealthy white males who are now in charge.

I oppose all #imperialism and #SettlerColonialism, not just U.S. and NATO imperialism and settler-colonialism. Having lived on the underbelly of #capitalism most of my life, I am #anticapitalist and ferociously opposed to #neoliberalism. I oppose physical and structural violence.

Human beings have #HumanRights. These rights are not constrained by their governments' failures to ratify certain human rights treaties.

#Borders exist to mark off territory controlled by elites whose competition accounts for most if not all wars and to deny human beings on the "wrong" side of an arbitrary line rights and privileges available on the "right" side. This cannot be justified ethically. I am hostile to #xenophobia

Finally, I am pessimistic about the future of humanity. #COVID19 and the #ClimateCrisis demonstrate our unfitness for survival.

So, I guess I'm an #anarchist now. It's not so much that my values have changed, though a few of them have. Mostly it's that the meanings of the old labels have changed.

For instance, in the 80s I was a #conservative because I believed in less government. Now I'm an anarchist for similar reasons. I want no government.

I'm a computational neuroscientist (#Neuroscience #CompNeuro) and science reformer based at Imperial College London.

I like to build things and organisations that make it easier to do better #science.

I made the Brian spiking neural network simulator (https://briansimulator.org) with @romainbrette and @mstimberg.

I co-founded #Neuromatch with @kordinglab and a bunch of others, and the SNUFA community with @fzenke.

In my main research, I'm interested in how the brain uses spikes to carry out computations, and what advantages that might have. Increasingly, my work revolves around using methods from #MachineLearning because that finally lets us build models that actually require intelligence, the unique property of the brain I'm interested in.

I also want to make science better. Neuromatch's mission is to democratise science, and with our new open #publishing initiative (https://nmop.io) I'm hoping we'll be able to dramatically change the murky world of academic publishing.

You might (ha!) also see some political commentary from me. I'm a left-wing #anarchist.
