Vanitas - Still Life with Books and Manuscripts and a Skull (1663) by Evert Collier (1642-1708). Collier was a Dutch painter who specialized in the "Vanitas" type of still life composed of such motifs as a skeleton, globe, or musical instruments which were portrayed as a warning against the vanity of this world.

Fishing Boats at Sea (1860s) by Claude Monet (1840 - 1926). Although this painting was finished in the studio, it has the freshness of the plein-air style Monet practiced with Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind. It also employs a kind of coarse realism, as developed by his friend, Gustave Courbet. It is the broad brushwork, the unconventional flattened picture plane, and the harsh contrast of dark and light.

The pot pictured below is one of my favourite pit fired pieces of pottery. .
Pit firing is the original method for firing clay pots and dates back 30,000 years. Colouration comes from combustible materials that are burned. As these materials burn, vapours are released. Hot pots, still porous take the colour.
I do a pit firing once a year and I love feeling connected to the dawn of my chosen craft.

"Christina's World," the famous painting by American artist Andrew Wyeth, went out of MOMA's gallery rotation in 2024, and Adam Neese, the museum's Senior Collections Photographer for Conservation, took the opportunity to take a closer look at it. For the MoMA blog, he writes about the imaging techniques he used to examine the painting, and what they revealed. "We now have a set of detailed visual images, with each stitched image comprising over a billion pixels. These images preserve not just the appearance of the painting, but its material history," he writes.
