Discovery alert!

A spherical shell-like structure 1 billion light-years in diameter named Ho’oleilana is discovered in the distribution of relatively nearby galaxies. We posit this is the 1st observation of an individual Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO).

New!! Observations of our Event Horizon Telescope (#EHT) collaboration have uncovered strong & organized magnetic fields spiraling around the edge of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). Images in polarized light of the #blackhole in the Milky Way center reveal structures similar to those in M87*, suggesting that strong magnetic fields may be common to all black holes. This also hints toward a hidden jet in Sgr A*!

LIGO Detects Gravitational Waves from Merging Black Holes

Explanation: Gravitational radiation has been directly detected. The first-ever detection was made by both facilities of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in Washington and Louisiana simultaneously last September. After numerous consistency checks, the resulting 5-sigma discovery was published today. The measured gravitational waves match those expected from two large black holes merging after a death spiral in a distant galaxy, with the resulting new black hole momentarily vibrating in a rapid ringdown. A phenomenon predicted by Einstein, the historic discovery confirms a cornerstone of humanity's understanding of gravity and basic physics. It is also the most direct detection of black holes ever. The featured illustration depicts the two merging black holes with the signal strength of the two detectors over 0.3 seconds superimposed across the bottom. Expected future detections by Advanced LIGO and other gravitational wave detectors may not only confirm the spectacular nature of this measurement but hold tremendous promise of giving humanity a new way to see and explore our universe.

Right in front, one of the movable ATs stands tall, while the UTs are scanning the sky.

The lasers emerging from the UTs create each a bright artificial star on the sky to correct observations for the blurring effect of the atmosphere. Until recently, only one UT was equipped with lasers. But now one additional laser has been installed in the other 3.

An image taken from orbit shows the potato-shaped satellite Phobos orbiting Mars. The perspective places Phobos very close to the Martian limb, above elongated whitish clouds near the terminator. Phobos appears predominantly grey, while the surface of Mars displays tones ranging from rusty red to darker hues near its terminator. Some craters are visible on the surface of Mars, they should be much larger than Phobos. The camera scanning the satellite causes the view of the Martian surface to appear stretched as it moves by.

1/2 Young or old? There’s both in this image!

The main object depicted here is known as Ve 7–27. It was long believed to be a planetary nebula — namely, the end phase of a sun-like star’s life. Yet ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) has shown it to actually be a still-forming baby star.

But there's also a dead star lurking just nearby, so keep reading!

The image shows a bright star at the centre of an hourglass-shaped cloud. The star is shooting a jet along the axis of the hourglass. The jet isn’t a continuous line but has knots or clumps along it. A yellowish-green smudge is visible right next to the bright star, the remains of a dead star that expelled a lot of material visible in this image, enshrouding the young star too.
