If public funding is being considered for a for-profit model, a robust and transparent technical assessment should be conducted first, including an evaluation of whether the AT Protocol is truly more scalable than ActivityPub.
I disagree that the two are technically complementary. Currently, BlueSky operates as a largely centralized platform, allowing it to avoid many of the governance and moderation challenges inherent to decentralized networks.
Its growth, with ~40 million users, shows that strong product design, marketing, and familiar timelines attract nontechnical audiences. This is a lesson in usability and investment, not necessarily a protocol advantage.
If they complement each other, it is politically and socially, not architecturally. One has capital and media visibility. The other has a live, interoperable ecosystem in which public institutions are already participating.
Public funding decisions should be made accordingly.

Will Mastodon, the platform that keeps the #Fediverse alive, miss a strategic opportunity to bring official institutions on board at scale?
By watching how #EuroSky is being marketed compared to #Mastodon, it certainly seems that way.
I wish the folks at Mastodon would invest in more professional marketing, similar to what we're seeing from its rival, Bluesky.
There was a major meeting in the EU Parliament focused on this topic, yet there was no announcement or microblog post from Mastodon. Zero engagement.

Ahora que para sorpresa de nadie la empresa conjunta estadounidense de #TikTok que la red social tuvo que crear para que no les bloquearan ha salido mal, mucha gente busca alternativas. De momento parece que hay dos que se posicionan:
Una es #UpScrolled, red social indie australiana creada por un desarrollador palestino-australiano.
La otra es #Skylight, que pese a ser de USA es una red social más abierta que usa el mismo #ATProtocol que #Bluesky.
No se menciona tanto, pero también está #Loops basada en #ActivityPub.
¿Conseguirá alguna de estas alternativas asentarse?

https://arewedecentralizedyet.online/ has been switched over to new datasources for the social networks, coming from my own #fediverse crawler and #atprotocol observer. Improvements include better heuristics for fediverse user counts and real monthly active user stats for #bluesky/#atproto . I'm also making more raw data available, both for the most recent counts and historical data at https://arewedecentralizedyet.online/data/
Overall, doesn't change the conclusions much, but I'm very happy with these new datasources.

It does feel like #activitypub has been frozen in amber, maybe this will help. I'm hoping #mastodon developers get involved or its very hard to see how things will change.
Especially the Live Online Account Portability stuff which #atprotocol just has from the get go.

Nach dem Grok-/Deepfake-Skandal auf X fordert die EU, europäische Social-Media-Alternativen aktiv zu fördern: staatliche Unterstützung für private Initiativen, Innovation sowie echte Daten- und Inhaltsportabilität, damit Nutzer ihre Plattform wechseln können, ohne erneut in Abhängigkeiten oder neue Lock-ins zu geraten.
Mit "Eurosky" entsteht daraufhin wieder ein neues Projekt auf Basis des AT-Protokoll – architektonisch teil-dezentral, praktisch derzeit aber stark plattformzentriert.
Noch ferner in der Zukunft liegt W Social, das ebenfalls eine unabhängige Alternative zu X sein und den Einsatz von Bots vollständig ausschließen will.
Dabei gibt es mit Mastodon längst eine europäische Plattform, die genau diese Prinzipien lebt, aber bis heute an Reichweite und Sichtbarkeit scheitert.
Für mich wird hier Technik gebaut, um ein Nutzungs- und Förderproblem zu kaschieren. Neue Plattformen allein ändern daran wenig.

FediverseにBluesky/AT Protocolを含むかは時々問われるけど、そういう問いが生まれること自体が、ActivityPub圏とAT Protocol圏の結び付きの深化を表してると思う。
