Nature-inspired computers are shockingly good at math
https://phys.org/news/2026-01-nature-good-math.html
> Neuromorphic computers, inspired by the architecture of the human brain, are proving surprisingly adept at solving complex mathematical problems that underpin scientific and engineering challenges.
It’s hard to explain but my thoughts are not words, exactly - I can described my thoughts (poorly) with words but that is not what is going on in my brain. Can anyone else relate? #science #brain #epistemology

Hello — I’m Joy, a health & medical writer doing research communications.
I work with researchers and health organizations to turn complex research into clear, responsible communication — research summaries, patient-friendly materials, outreach content.
I’m especially interested in:

🧠🎮 DYK that having to pee might make you a more elite gamer?
Researchers found that the need to "hold it in" spills over into other parts of the #brain, leading to more patient, less impulsive decisions suitable for tough boss battles.

In a recent experiment, lab-grown brain tissues were able to solve a fundamental engineering problem, and the results may help researchers probe how neurological disease alters the brain's capacity for plasticity. "We're trying to understand the fundamentals of how neurons can be adaptively tuned to solve problems,” says Ash Robbins, robotics and artificial intelligence researcher at the University of California-Santa Cruz. ☕🧠 Researchers at #Harvard followed 130,000 people for over 40 years to find that moderate #coffee or #tea intake is linked to an 18% lower risk of #dementia.
The long-term study suggests #caffeine may help preserve neural networks and reduce #brain inflammation as we age.

🧠✨ Researchers at #Cornell have developed a "MOTE" – a tiny wireless sensor that can record #brain activity while sitting on a grain of salt.
Powered by infrared light rather than bulky #batteries, these microscopic devices are small enough to monitor neural #health for years without irritating sensitive brain tissue.

🧠⚖️ Ever wondered why you put off big decisions? New #research suggests that the emotional pain of anticipating a negative outcome is six times stronger than the happiness of a potential gain.
This biological imbalance doesn't just make us avoid risks – it actually makes us more impatient as our #brains scramble to end the "emotional burden" of uncertainty.

Do you remember where you first learned about Neurons and that the brain is made of them and that they basically are who we are? Was it at school, high school, university? Was it from a parent or a friend? Or maybe from a book?
I'm just curious about everyone's experiences :)
By far the thing I am most proud of creating is the #ggseg universe.
A suite of #rstats packages to plot #brain atlas data in #ggplot2. Its mainly made for inflated cortical surfaces (which may be rendered as 2d objects), though we also have some subcortical slice views of crucial atlases.
ggseg contains three main packages:
- ggseg - ggplot2 2d (sf) maps
- ggseg3d - tri-surf mesh plots (plotlly)
- ggsegExtra - pipelines for new atlas creation
+ 23 different atlases
