1/2 Current research suggests Earth's sustainable population is around 3 billion, living with Swiss-like efficiency. Over-consumption in large countries and future pollution from high-population poor countries must be reduced. The challenge lies in achieving this while managing climate collapse and its side effects. A gap exists in discourse on handling declining populations within degrowth organizations.

Our societies are facing environmental collapse. We feel that we have to do something. But we don't know where to start.

My thoughts on this:
We need collective action. We can recycle and save tapwater until our fingers fall off. If the structures don't change, individual actions will mostly keep us busy while the world gets burned because of a mixture of rich people's greed, bureaucrats that "just do their job" and a society that has too little phantasy to see the many desirable alternatives to this apocalyptic late-stage capitalism.
There is this amazing concept of the handprint, making you ask yourself the question: "where can I promote societal change?". This is on contrast to the 'carbon footprint' that measures the impact of our individual lifestyle and shifts the guilt to the people. This concept was widely promoted by fossil fuel companies. [1]
At the bottom of the web is the link to the poster [2]. It is quite straightforward to use e.g. in a workshop with other people asking themselves the question "what can we do?".
1. What topic am I enthusiastic about?
(E.g. sustainable mobility, ecological agriculture, renewable energy, social justice...)
2. At which level am I familiar with decision-making processes ?
(At work, university, religious group, neighbourhood...)
3. What is the best way to implement my idea?
(Make the sustainable option the default, pressure politicians, make sustainable more known or affordable...)
4. Which allies do I need? (Initiatives, colleagues, experts, politicians, media)
And here you go. At the end you have a plan for an attainable objective that will make a difference and bring change on a higher level. All that while showing yourself that you can be part of the change, creating community and mobilizing others. We have a lot to do, so this is something to start with. 
Interestingy, the handprint was originally launched by the Indian organisation CEE ( https://www.ceeindia.org ) as an open concept of positive action!

A lot of games are trying to replicate very expansionist core loops, be it Minecraft's, Factorio's and so on, which see the player as a force acting on the environment / ecosystem, not working together with it.

Who am I: a lady, a bitch, a woman, a human. Cisgender, queer, white. Living in New York, where I was born, but I have traveled. Doing my best to support my Darling Nonbinary Spouse in their challenges being one of very few Black people in our community. Currently working as a drafter of soil/water conservation infrastructure. Before that, I bounced around a lot. Did construction and childcare and food service and data entry and more.
What you can expect from me: PLENTY boosts. I see it, I like it, I boost. Regular posts about #ClimateChange, #Degrowth, #GreenBuilding, and related topics. Commentary about social justice. Some news, but more opinion, about USA and NYS politics. I tag these (USpol/NYpol), but don't CW them. Edit: almost forgot to mention: I'm an anarchist apparently (I had to look it up) and I hate capitalism.
Other, less weighty stuff I like to talk about: #music of any genre. I'm developing the desire to become a DJ and collect vinyl, somebody stop me! #Crochet and fiber arts. #SciFi, #SpecFic. Not a skilled shitposter but I do appreciate the art form.

On monday I'm presenting a paper on solar.lowtechmagazine.com during the 'Computing within #Limits' conference.
In the paper I'm describing the design choices we made, such as designing for unavailability and how they were based on reducing a few key metrics such as data transferred, calculations per request and use of third party services. This opens up a way of thinking about #degrowth and ICT. We should be looking in to that waaaay more.
The paper also tries to implicitly answer the 'how do we do sustainable web design?' question and argues aiming for reduction (of bytes transferred, computation and infra required) as useful rule of thumbs guiding a design. That is to say, solar protocols, 'low tech look', 3.5MB dithered images, green CDNs etc ain't it.
However, it also self-criticizes solar.lowtechmagazine.com for the fact that it is so unreproducible and a very limited and 'easy' use case. So yeah no answer but thinking through degrowth should definitely be considered as the direction of the answer..

40 households, subscribing at $30/month over 2 years + power (solar). Train with your own datasets.
Entire set up takes half a rack.
