A 386 at 25MHz and 4MB RAM is the perfect system for playing the original Wing Commander. The game was super sensitive to the CPU speed and often ran way too fast on modern CPUs... like a 486DX! 😂

I had been after one of these machines for a while, I was fascinated with how cool the Apricot F1 and Portable are, this is the machine that they were based on, and with dual drives and multiple expansion slots it will definitely be useful in supporting my other Apricot machines

i'm making a #QBasic game using mode 13h, 320x200 8bpp. i'm using the line doubling feature of the VGA card to make it 320x100 then manually doubling each pixel horizontally for 160x100
i realized i could use a palette with 3 bits red/green and 2 blue, and then do "subpixel" dither to generate the in between colors. i made a converter to test if that would look good, and it does

Most people affirm it is only a subpar GUI on top of DOS, but it is much more than that! Win3.11 on a 386 is not as far from #Win95 as we could imagine.

I'm in a most excellent mood! A long long time ago, I got a fancy #MiSTer #FPGA. For those unaware, this device emulates everything from old #Zilog #Z80 systems to low end PCs and arcade machine - or rather, it doesn't exactly emulate them - it sort of becomes the old legacy hardware itself, meaning you'll have nearly clock cycle perfect emulation.
Anyhoo, I also got a #MT32pi for it, which is a thing that emulates old #Roland #MIDI hardware that nobody back in the day could afford. Many of the early DOS titles support this, and it's an absolute joy to listen to. There's a whole sad story to the MT32-Pi project, but that's for another day.
Sadly, it never worked in my setup - until today! I had it for years and years but finally I put in the effort - a lot of measuring and some soldering and now it actually works! Delicious music in old #DOS games! I thought the thing was for sure fried, so I couldn't be happier!

Das DOS-Spiel "Monkey Island 2" erschien im Jahre 1995 für 9,90DM als Bestseller Games Heft Nr. 7 im deutschen Zeitschriftenhandel und wurde mit diesem Taschengeld-kompatiblen Preis auch sehr schnell extrem populär. Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage veröffentlichte der Verlag gegen Ende 1996 sogar eine Zweitauflage des Hefts mit einer inhaltlich aktualisierten, wenn auch optisch etwas einfacher gehaltenen CD-ROM. Diese Zweitpressung ist heute ziemlich selten und schwer zu finden.
Nach langer Suche bin ich vor ein paar Tagen endlich über eBay fündig geworden und so konnte ich euch nun beide CDs ins Internet Archive hochladen. Vollständige BIN/CUE Disc Images, sowie hochauflösende JPG Scans. Viel Spaß!

I’m focused on learning and getting hands-on with #RaspberryPi at home and #cloud computing solutions both at work and at home.
I moved into a #SecurityEngineering role in 2020, so a lot of my focus is now more security focussed across all tech stacks.
My main focus at present when it comes to cloud is predominately #Microsoft #Azure, with Google and AWS of interest also, as well as other cloud infrastructure services such as those provided by CloudFlare, though I’m planning a move away from them due to their moral/ethical choices.
Away from work and tech, I love to #travel the world with my wife and enjoy very amateur #photography to record our adventures.
I also love most genres of #music, live in concert when I can, with a particular love of #Rock/ #Metal and also #Trance (coincidentally, given the profession of a somewhat more well known namesake of mine!).
