You can do both of these things by using Mastodon's filters feature. Filters lets you automatically hide posts with particular words, phrases, hashtags, links or emoji in them.

We ARE the algorithm. But that also means it can take a little extra work to get the feed that works for you.
How do YOU 🫵 curate your feed? How do you use lists?
Here's my algorithm:
Someone posts something cool? Follow 'em.
Someone posts something EXTREMELY COOL (or I've seen their cool content before)?
They get added to my ⭐️ Faves list.
Then, in the Advanced Web Interface (Ala Tweetdeck, see 2nd link below), I've got:
1. ⭐️ Faves. 🔘Hide these posts from Home. Also, show me replies IF someone it's a reply to someone else also in my Faves list.
2. 🏠 Home: folk I follow who aren't in ⭐️ Faves
3.👋 # introduction (to welcome, follow, and boost interesting new folk!)

Many thanks to folks using the content warning (CW) feature on posts as needed (especially violent photos or videos). Thanks also for adding hashtags, helpful for filtering / searching / following ❤️
FYI, a CW does not hide information, it adds information. It only takes one click to reveal the body of the post. It gives folks with PTSD or other issues a chance to prepare.
Anyone who finds CWs annoying can set an option to expand all CW posts - see attached image.
As a user interface note on the continuing discussion of CW's
(1) Add CWs liberally to your posts, UKPol, MH, violence, war, eye-contact, food, alcohol, spoilers, etc.
(2) If you don't have any triggers or stressors around these subjects and find clicking to expand them tiresome go to Preferences -> Appearance -> "Always expand posts marked with content warnings"
Magically all the CW'd posts in your feed will be auto-expanded. Then *everybody* wins, the experience is good for all.

It regularly posts themed lists of good accounts to follow, and it also has a website with thousands of recommended accounts sorted into topics:
To follow an account listed on the website, copy-paste the "Fediverse address" on its listing into the search box in Mastodon and then click "Follow".
There is a lot going on in the world right now, and it may be overwhelming at times. If you want to follow the news but you also need some way of taking breaks, you might want to try Mastodon's "Lists" feature.
Lists lets you move the accounts you follow into several separate timelines. You could for example create a "News" timeline and a "Non-News" timeline, then switch between them when you want to.

Would you like your public Mastodon posts to be as easy as possible for people to discover?
If so, you might want to opt into "full text search". This will make your public posts show up in search results a lot more easily.

If you don't activate it, your public posts will still be searchable but only by hashtag.

I really like the 'lists' feature Mastodon has. You can make lists to group accounts and optionally separate them from your main timeline. For example, I have lists for people I know from a specific context and lists for people that post about a specific topic. It helps my brain to have fewer context-switches and more structure.

Won't show in Local or Federated timelines, however will still show in Home timelines of your followers and can be boosted for others to see
Followers-Only:
Only people who follow you can see these posts, and they cannot be boosted

Only those mentioned in the post can see it, and it cannot be boosted, it's kinda like a direct message (DM)

Please remember, your instance admin can see your posts regardless of what type of post privacy you give it, if they so choose, by looking at the server logs or the database or whatever
But than again that's the case with any type of social media, public or private, proprietary or libre

✅ Make your profile "discoverable" in the settings—otherwise, only your username is searchable.
✅ Add a clear profile description: include your type (band, label, etc.) and music genre(s). If you're a band, promoter, etc., add your city to show up in local searches.
✅ Add links—Bandcamp, website, etc.—to help people learn more and connect with your work!

How to block Bluesky from Mastodon:
1. Go to the profile page of the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy
2. Click ⋯
3. Click "Block Domain" to stop seeing Bluesky accounts
4. Click "Block" to prevent your own account being bridged to Bluesky
You may need to copy-paste @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy into the search box on your server to make the profile appear.
If you can't find the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy, your server is probably already blocking the Bluesky bridge.
