Happy Friday the 13th everyone! 🎉🎉
"Palantir CEO Alex Karp thinks his AI technology will lessen the power of “highly educated, often female voters, who vote mostly Democrat” while increasing the power of working-class men.
“This technology disrupts humanities-trained—largely Democratic—voters, and makes their economic power less. And increases the economic power of vocationally trained, working-class, often male, working-class voters....”

An amazing demonstration for International Women’s Day took place in Berlin yesterday, with an estimated 30,000 attendees, most of whom were women.
Later, when I searched the Fediverse for posts about the demonstration, I could only find three profiles other than my own.
This made me wonder about the discrepancy between what happens in the streets and what is reflected on social media. Social media can be a powerful space for political expression, dialogue, and connection. However, it requires a critical mass of users.
Some time ago, I ran a small poll asking women if patriarchal dynamics and male behavior on Mastodon, which is still largely dominated by white men, make participation harder.
Out of 169 responses, about 59% said yes (23% totally agree and 36% partially agree). Just 20% totally disagree. [1]
Even though that poll is far from representative, I couldn't forget the result when I noticed how little discussion there was here about the 30,000-person feminist demonstration in Berlin.
For the Fediverse to be a viable alternative to mainstream platforms, it must reflect the diversity and energy of offline movements. In my opinion, suggesting that "normies" should remain on Bluesky is not the way to go.

Happy International Men's Day (day 1 from 364) everyone!
If you think or know any man who thinks that women’s lower belly pooch is “their uterus showing and a gift from God” it’s not. It’s just fat. Normal, estrogen-driven fat distribution. Wrapping bullshit anatomy in religion to make insecure women feel grateful instead of informed is not body positivity. It’s disgusting manipulation

The measure of any society is how it treats its women and girls.

« Sans lignée, point d’existence. » Le retour au village italien révèle une mémoire collective féminine fascinante : des femmes inventant leur propre langue pendant la transhumance des hommes. L’impossible trahison tisse un lien poignant entre les luttes des aïeules et celles de Concetta. Une ode à la transmission matrilinéaire et à la résistance culturelle.

'What parents need to know to talk to their children about the manosphere'
The manosphere is a network of communities that create, consume and distribute content online aimed at men and boys.
They trivialise hateful rhetoric through memes, comedy and trolling (provocation or bullying for amusement) by framing it as self-help, entertainment and tools for financial success.
Manosphere content is promoted by various influencers on popular social media platforms.

Rob Mulhern was in his mid-20s when one of his closest friends died. In the fog of grief, he turned to YouTube for distraction and help.

What began as a self-help journey became a worldview shaped by frustration and division.

Not really new but new on this instance, so I'm making an intro post
#reintroduction
My topics and interests are: #books, #neurodiversity, #languages and #languagelearning, #maths, #physics, #politics, intersectional #feminism, the #climatecrisis, #mentalhealth, #depression and #adhd, but I mostly toot about random stuff in the end 😅
I always try to use CWs for sensitive topics and politics posts, please let me know if I forget or miss a topic that should be CWed in your opinion.
I mostly toot in German and English, although I might toot in Spanish or French from time to time, so feel free to respond to me in any of those languages. I'm always happy to provide a translation 😊
I'm also new on pixelfed, feel free to follow me on @luce@mental.camp, and I'm semi-active on bookwyrm, at @luceliest.
In a recent comparison of engagement around a Leave.X campaign post,[1] someone pointed out that a female journalist who is active in the feminist movement and critical of Big Tech had a very different experience than others.
The Mastodon post was shared twice, while the Bluesky version was shared over 200 times and received significantly more interactions. This raises questions about tech-savvy spaces like Mastodon and how they reflect broader societal issues.
For women on Mastodon:
Do you feel that the patriarchal dynamics and male behavior in this space, which is still largely dominated by white men, make it harder for women to participate?

My latest read was The Vegetarian by Han Kang. It is surreal. It is confronting. It is harrowing.
It is always tricky to engage with a novel that itself so clearly engages with a different society and its problems (in this case, misogyny in South Korea), but I felt the writing was very well maintained in translation. The novel certainly packed a punch in English.

The Margaret Atwood vision of the USA continues to become more & more prescient.... we are seeing the Handmaidenisation of the USA.
What was once science fiction is now public policy.... and in the UK there are people f the right who no doubt see this sort of move as entirely justified pronatalsm.
