View from Jug End, Taconic Mountains, Massachusetts. August 25, 2025.

November 8, 2025: This is an update and correction to my August post on the status of my planned long distance hikes.

On August 18 my friend Dave and I headed north along the Appalachian Trail from Falls Village, Connecticut towards Massachusetts. When we reached the Vermont border, we wanted to follow the Long Trail to its northern terminus at the Canadian border.

We are on a mountain standing atop a rock outcrop of light gray rock marbled with darker gray. There is a pine tree to our right. Some hardwoods to our left are already showing signs of autumn, several have leaves of gold and orange. We are looking across a broad valley hundreds of feet below filled with the greens of late summer. Most of it is covered with deep green forests broken by emerald green pastures and farm fields. A small pond is not far away near the middle of our view. A line of blue green hills and mountains runs along the far horizon. A morning of clouds is just giving way to bright sunshine. The sky is a soft blue filled with lines of clouds.

My 2025 hike is starting. My hiking partner Dave and I are hiking from Northwest Connecticut to Vermont's border with Canada. We start with 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Falls Village, Connecticut to the Massachusetts-Vermont border. Upon entering Vermont, the Appalachian Trail follows Vermont's Long Trail for just over 100 miles.

I had intended to begin hiking the Appalachian Trail for the second time in March 2025, forty-two years after my 1983 thru-hike. Then in September 2024 Hurricane Helene devastated the southern third of the Appalachian Trail.

We now have a new plan to hike more than 800 miles in 2025 while waiting for the spring of 2026 to attempt the full Appalachian Trail hike. The first of two planned hikes starts on or about April 14.

Just got back from my first #backpacking trip of the year and it did not disappoint! Set up base camp partway up a mountain next to a #stream, then summited the mountain the next day. Returned to camp for the night before heading back home. With the rainy conditions, people stayed away-- I didn't encounter a single person in two of the three days-- had the summit to myself! A few short saguaros are visible, but what is the cluster of cactus on the left that looks like Organ Pipe Cactus? I took this photo in the Mesa area, and I don’t think Organ Pipe Cacti are native here. Was it likely planted, or could it be something else that resembles Organ Pipe?

#Introduction

Mike, from Western MD, now in Baltimore. Nonprofit employee, and right now happy in that.

When not advocating for public transit, I like TTRPGs, reading, hiking, cooking, and a wide range of music. I've written some poetry, had one published, looking at doing some fiction as well.

When relaxing & watching TV, I hook rugs. I'm in a long distance relationship now, but going well. But I'm never one to turn down the opportunity for new friends.
