I'm still a research scientist at a major Midwestern (US) university in a psychiatry department.

Before this, I worked in several psychology and mathematics departments. There was also a short lived start-up company.

Despite the psych* department affiliations (and a psychology PhD) I am mostly a computational scientist doing #computing, #math, #stats, #datascience, and #informatics work.

My history goes back to 2003, when Chris Shiflett launched the phpcommunity.org project. We wanted to provide a hub for the PHP community. We built a great community on Freenode IRC & migrated to Libera.Chat IRC (we’re in #phpc). Nowadays, @ramsey manages the PHPC accounts & domains and is working to launch a non-profit for the PHP community.

Since there has been a huge burst of new activity out there, and everyone has been doing #introductions I guess I should (re)do a hashtag-laden #introduction of my own.

I am a mid-century modern weirdo from #YYC aka #Calgary #Alberta #Canada that runs https://coales.co Hometown/Mastodon site out of the garage in his back yard (the servers are literally bolted to the ceiling in there...told you I was weird)

Like a lot of people here I am a computer nerd who codes a lot of #Python and tinker with #microcontrollers and #OpenHardware and uses #Linux mostly. Professionally I do #IndustrialAutomation #SCADA stuff.

So here's mine. I blog, I write, I rewrite, I publish, I keep an eye on things I'm interested in and I post about them; mostly literature, science fiction, politics and other relevant stuff.

I will be using this thing in English and in Portuguese, mostly. Maybe a toot or two in other languages as well, as I speak 3 more with different degrees of proficiency.
