🛰️ New paper by Knowles et al.: Using the #JWST, the authors observed rapid variability in the auroral footprints of #Jupiter’s #moons in Jupiter’s #atmosphere.
IR observations show that the footprints of moons like #Io can change on short timescales, highlighting the dynamic interaction between Jupiter’s #magnetosphere and its satellites. The moon–magnetosphere coupling driving Jupiter’s #aurora is more variable than previously assumed.

Total Lunar Eclipse Week!
On March 3, the full Moon slips into Earth’s shadow, glowing copper-red in a total lunar eclipse. No telescope needed — just clearer skies than the rain/snow currently threatening. Of course.
When it clears: Jupiter shines after sunset, Orion and M42 dazzle, and planetary pairings grace the evening sky.

This Week’s Sky at a Glance (Feb 20–March 1)
Forecast for us in New England: mostly “meh.” Clouds rule the week, but if you catch a break, look up. Jupiter is blazing high after sunset. Saturn sets early. Orion dominates the evening with Taurus and the Pleiades nearby.
Late winter skies are prime deep-sky season—grab it if you can.

Now that I have a new home on solarsystem.social, here's a new #introduction!
I am a #planetary scientist working at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (#IPGP) in France. My research uses the #gravity field, #topography, and #MagneticField of the planets to decipher their internal structure and geologic evolution. My favorite terrestrial body is the #Moon, but I also work with #Mercury, #Venus, and #Mars. Soon I will need to learn about #Psyche and the icy satellites of #Jupiter!

Doing some comparisons between my scopes. Just got a new AT72EDII. (FL 432mm) and it is a pretty capable scope for being a lightweight grab and go. Took Jupiter images through it, my workhorse AT90CFT (FL 540mm) and my planetary scope the AT125EDL (FL 975mm).
The skies are just trash tonight, though with thin high clouds and just atrocious seeing (twinkling means unsteady skies). We'll see what the fancy software can do! #AmateurAstronomy #Jupiter
Der #Jupiter grade besonders hell, rechts davon gut sichtbar #Aldebaran. Diagonal rechts oben über Jupiter die #Plejaden.

Last Friday, we welcomed a delegation from @EuroHPC_JU to JSC to showcase our HPC & quantum infrastructure.
Highlights included ⚡️JUPITER, Europe’s first exascale supercomputer, ⚛️JADE (EuroHPC QPU), ⚛️JUPSI (D-Wave), and our 🔬CryoLab.
A great exchange with a key partner — we’re excited for what’s ahead in 2026! 🚀

Io in True Color
Galileo spacecraft's 1999 image shows Io, the Solar System's strangest #moon, in true colors. Its bright yellow hue comes from sulfur and molten rock. Intense tidal forces from #Jupiter heat Io's interior, fueling active volcanoes that are reshaping its surface. Some lava is hot enough to glow in darkness.

Not sure I even have German followers here, but: Zusammen mit @bne86 habe in einem Podcast über #JUPITER berichtet: https://codeforthought.buzzsprout.com/1326658/episodes/18342781-de-jupiter-hpc-fur-die-wissenschaft-mit-a-herten-und-b-von-st-vieth

Finally, #JUPITER crossed the 1 ExaFLOP/s threshold today. The list is lying to you, though, it's not like it's 1000 PFLOP/s exactly, it's 1000.184 PFLOP/s; the rest got lost to rounding.
The 184 TFLOP/s are pretty much exactly the same as the previous #JSC supercomputer JUGENE from 2008. Incredible, that this gets lost in the margins only 17 years later.

My #SC25 is quite busy again this year. When I'm not contributing (see below), visiting vendors, or staffing our @fzj_jsc booth, I try to see as many sessions as possible (why are there so many interesting talks? And all at the same time!).
Contributions:
- Sunday: Multi-GPU Tutorial
- Monday: WACCPD Workshop
- Tuesday: Gordon Bell Climate Prize Paper (not presenting)
- Wednesday: IXPUG BoF on Perf Portability
- Friday: HPCTESTS Workshop
- More, depending on things…

The moon Metis orbits Jupiter at 0.01% of the speed of light.
Pretty badass for a little rock (~20km radius). Imagine the tidal stress...
> Working on adding atmosphere to Jupiter
> Flying into Jupiter at 0.3c (for science)
> "You are dead"
I keep forgetting to turn on god mode...
