Once upon a time
grew up in bayou country
pushed a lawn mower until I got a drivers license at 15
then worked in oil fields summers til I was 22
roustabout bullcook mudlogger
oil pumper oil barge deckhand
shifted gears in ’79, quit chasing money
chased time in nature instead
NPS volunteer, USFS range crew & river patrol
whitewater guide, wilderness instructor
twig & log furniture builder, timber framer
surveyor assistant, home builder
#NPS river ranger, woodcrafter, & maintenance supervisor

Top half is clear blue sky, across the center on the horizon is the snow covered Henry Mts. and the slick rock sandstone of the Maze district of Canyonlands N.P. In the lower right is an NPS Jeep pickup on a snowy road heading towards the steep descent down Bobby's Hole in the Needles district. Across the middle are Piñon and Juniper trees on snow covered slopes.
I was heading back to Needles headquarters after a 3 day exploration and wood gathering trip up Cottonwood Cr., through Beef Basin and Ruin Park, and down through the Grabens and Elephant Hill. I will be forever thankful to have had the supervisors I did while volunteering a couple seasons there. Mahalo Dave H. (RIP) and Thea N. for literally changing my life from an oil field worker to a conservationist and protector of natural places.
It’s never too late to do things that bring you joy,
but don’t wait, there’s never too much joy.
