#GUUG #FFG
Just wrote a blogpost about my adventures with #OmniOS #Illumos #ZFS replication using #ZRepl : https://extrowerk.com/2026-03-03/ZFS-replacation-with-zrepl.html
#Linux containers were just getting in the way. Hey #OmniOS - It's been a minute! Let's go create some zones.
I think it's time to write an #introduction for this account as well!
I'm Stefano Marinelli, Barista of the illumos Cafe and the BSD Cafe. I'm a technology and open source enthusiast, a strong advocate for #OwnYourData, and against computer monoculture, even when it comes to open source solutions.
I've been active in the #Fediverse for years and am a firm believer in it. I decided to found this Cafe to bring the positive spirit of the BSD Cafe to curious and passionate users of #illumos based operating systems (#OmniOS, #SmartOS, #Tribblix, #OpenIndiana, etc.).
I'll mainly use this account for content related to this instance and illumos-based operating systems, while my account at the BSD Cafe - @stefano - remains my primary one.
For more information about the illumos Cafe, you can read the introductory post here: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/08/18/introducing-the-illumos-cafe/
I had to give @BoxyBSD a try and it is really amazing! Just got an #illumos box running there for free and it works without any issues. So, not only #BSD based systems, but also #opensolaris is supported at @gyptazy's amazing service. Thank you very much for this service. Btw, you could add real home directories for the created user ;)
Maybe more people will have a look at #solaris like #openindiana or #tribblix or #omnios.
Huh, I have a #OmniOS machine and a bhyve-branded zone running #FreeBSD on it. The zone has a vnic attached to the physical interface.
If I download the hetzner speedtest 100mb file on the physical host, it reaches speeds of up to 1230kbps and takes 1 minute 24 seconds to finish.
If I do the same thing on the FreeBSD vm, it reaches speeds of up to 15.6mbps and finishes in 7 seconds.
How is that even possible?
