Oh, that's nice! I've memorized the unicode hex values for en-dash – (U+2013) and em-dash — (U+2014) and use them regularly. The three-per-em space (U+2004) is useful for formatting poetry, too. These aren't customizations so much as a Linux thing, but I also like adding little conveniences to my writing setup. I configured a Vim-like layer in my programmable keyboard for modal editing in environments outside Vim and Emacs, and have a lot of configurations for Emacs Org Mode which is my usual drafting environment, from pretty bullet shapes (see my account header image) to word processor export settings. I'm a tech as well as lit nerd so this stuff is a lot of fun for me!
Interesting #emacs #orgmode thing I tried that works: you can put inline images into table cells.
This is of limited use with native org tables, since you can't have multiple lines per cell, which means you can't add any CAPTION or ATTR_HTML data, but I'm tinkering with the idea of an old-school contact sheet-style workflow in org mode, something along the lines of:
generate a table of thumbnails from some list of image files
write some kind of "reject image in current cell" function (I don't actually know if there are org-table apis that would support this? Maybe it could be run via inline button after the image?) function
write some other "do stuff with remaining images" function that you can run when you're done weeding through photos
I was looking for my personal knowledge management system. How can I store documents, how can I interconnect them, how can I build something that I can use on Mac/Linux/Win - and that stores data locally. Easy to read, no magic, just plain text (references can be everything). In the end - I ended with #emacs #orgmode with the addition of small helpers like #org-attach (builtin). The knowledge articles are stored in #org-roam, org-attach stores the data in org-roam-directory/data using IDs. If I store a document I create a reference node that has the attachment in it - from there I crosslink to my org notes. Simple, no fuzz. Just Emacs and some lousy config lines. Did I mention, that I blog from there as well? The blog posts for my blog (https://node01.de) are nodes inside org-roam, that will be published using ox-hugo to a 2nd repo and are published statically to a webserver.

After a dry spell I'm finally booked for enough work to need #OrgMode and #OrgAgenda again to keep track, and when I opened Agenda again for the first time since mid-2025 things were obviously A Mess. 💫 Some to-do items had been rescheduled almost 200 times, untracked habits lay forgotten and dying. It took < 5 minutes to clear or triage though, and Agenda became usable again with the peace of mind that work tasks won't slip through the cracks.
Honestly the Org Mode/Agenda system fills the niche of a Bullet Journal (which I also tried for a few years) for me in being easy to come back to after I inevitably drop off from time to time. And that's a good thing, not only because I get to have an organization system even after being away for a while, but because there are stretches of life when a system genuinely isn't necessary and may do more harm than good. It's nice to be able to move fluidly between the states. #Emacs #ADHD

#orgmode To use strings over and over again create a new org file called macros.org and put in some macros like this:
#+macro: my-string
then use {{{my-string}}} where ever you need to use it.
org-download-clipboard is amazing
Doesn't work when running emacs remotely over X11 (at least, not out of the box from xquartz to linux), I haven't tried it with TRAMP yet
but yeah, org-download in general is life-changing. I'll have to come up with some key-bindings
TIL about org-feed, which is built into #orgmode and lets you configure a list of #RSS feeds, with the ability to send new items in each feed to different org files and/or headings. or, process them through some other function. All kinds of flexibility.
which is great because I am tinkering with something where I want to sort RSS entries into org files based on date, and as someone who can barely elisp their way out of a paper bag this is not a wheel I would have been able to reinvent

Currently I have 91MB of .org files in ~/org. That's 8438 files, 1862809 lines of text, 100967 headlines, and 9695114 words. The largest single file is 1.4MB and the longest lined file has 26370 lines.
