A ratsnake, probably eastern. Pretty sure it just consumed a baby robin... On our river rocks bed below the hedges. We followed it around the corner, down the hill, and across the grass into the woods.

A ratsnake that is mostly black with bits of gray scales, and a light color under the face and chin is curled atop some river rocks, near a hedge trunk, with the inside corner of two brick walls in the background. There's also some dead oak leaves and some green coming from the bush trunk.

Fact: Eyelash vipers are venomous and found in South America. They spend most of their time in trees, so bites to humans are rare.

A few years back I was playing with different poetry formats, and using various subjects from games I was playing as inspiration. This next poem was part of a collection around the theme "snakes and serpents".

It is a triolet, following a rhyme scheme of ABaAabAB, where the capital letters represent lines repeated verbatim.

I never gave this poem a title, so let's call it "Surgery"

A snake is a surgeon wrapped in scales,
Its fangs the needle that pierces your veins,
Healing you of all that sickens and ails.
A snake is a surgeon wrapped in scales
Who swiftly frees you from the world's travails.
A hiss, a bite, and away your suffering drains.
A snake is a surgeon wrapped in scales,
Its fangs the needle that pierces your veins.

Mastodon needs more #snakes and #science facts because it's #Monday and #mondays need mangrove snakes.

Fun facts: Despite their alarming appearance and aggressive tendencies, mangrove snakes are mildly venomous. The bites can cause pain and swelling but aren't fatal to humans. They are found in Asia.

Note: Mangrove snakes can be tamed and kept as pets but they aren't beginner's snakes and can be a handful to tame. Like most snakes in the colubrid family, they're nippy as babies.
