⚠️ Alabama & people who enjoy rivers here (vacationing, etc.)! Please read & send email by March 26th, or plan to attend the public hearing that day if you are local. You do not need to be Alabama resident to speak up, but it is best if you enjoy our biodiversity, vacation or hike here, etc.
There is a Tyson chicken factory in Blountsville that is attempting to get a water pollution permit (yes, it's a thing) for discharge from the factory slaughterhouse into the (locally famous) Locust Fork River. It is upstream of several popular public summer river recreational spots. The Locust Fork River feeds into the Warrior River and is a very important fresh water source for many. It is popular for all sorts of outdoor water recreation and of course has high biodiversity.
What you can do: There is a public hearing, but you don't have to attend if you are not a local! All you have to do is compose an email about why you are against polluting this river and send it to Daphne Y. Lutz, Chief, at water-permits@adem.alabama.gov (mastodon is separating out the water- part, keep it in!) Written comments must reference NPDES Permit Number AL0001449.
This site has info for the public hearing, as well as a document for more information: https://adem.alabama.gov/events-meetings/tyson-farms-blountsville-processing-plant
You can find a lot of info about these rivers via internet search.
