I've wanted a #vt100 since I found out about them many years ago, and I finally got one.
This one seems to have been built in 1980. It is in dire need of a good cleaning, but it powers on and provides a nice, clean picture. The keyboard seems fully functional. I don't think it has any of the options like current based comms but that's fine.

Got my A/UX installation and update discs ready for this weekend to get A/UX installed on the Macintosh Quadra 650. I already have the disk images from which to boot off as well as other disk images for updates to perform post-3.1-update. Gonna create those on the StarMax. 💾 🍎
Not sure if this is compatible with #MARCHintosh, but it will be on a 68K Mac and System 7.1 is used to get that one there, so maybe?
If you find yourself using or required to use Ai LLM and you want to make your day brighter, write an #agents.md file and tell it that it is a crusty old grey beard who wrote C and assembly on VAX and PDP11 #Unix workstations, and enjoys drinking hot coffee.
It will give you the best old curmudgeonly responses, that just bring sunshine to my day.
What is the `chruby` of Python? I don't want uv or other incomprehensible change your entire workflow bullshit.
I want to run a command, that changes the version of python that lives in my path. Would be nice if it can automatically install that version of python too.
A few notes on alternatives to vim that i have been investigating / using. It's nvi for me.
(with thanks to @mrmasterkeyboard and @mathew for notes)
#unix #linux
looking around for a new longterm projekt - should i get forth || python || rust ?
I've taken to calling my pal with 30 years more linux/unix experience than me, "sensei" whenever he helps me through a problem. He looks annoyed when I say it, but I don't care. His knowledge is saving me days of frustration.
Or, more accurately, after days of frustration trying to figure out problems myself, after telling him, the problem is solved in minutes. 😅
Je cherche le nom du jeu, joué sur les terminaux X, de Jussieu paris 7 au début des années 90. Je pense que le nom est xmaze mais je n'en suis pas sûr. Ensuite je cherche les sources.

Isn't it weird that language stdlibs don't have support for atomically replacing files? Why is there no C++ or Rust stdlib feature which, on UNIX, implements the "create temporary file on the same volume, write to that file, rename into place" pattern
It's not like it's an incredibly difficult piece to write by hand, but there are subtle gotchas. Given that it ought to be the default way programs replace e.g state files, it ought to be supported by the stdlib, no?

New series: FreeBSD Foundationals
Part 1 is about Jails - specifically VNET Jails. What epair interfaces actually are (virtual ethernet cables), how bridges tie them together, why the host is basically a router for your jails, and what devfs rulesets control.
Covers the full lifecycle from jail.conf through pf firewalling with NAT/RDR for IPv4 and direct routing for IPv6. Plus the gotchas that'll cost you hours if nobody warns you.
Not a beginner tutorial, hardcore details. The useful middle.

This is a fascinating time-capsule read about #motif #unix and the early #linux times. It is maybe a little #retrocomputing but not entirely.

The removal of TrueNAS legacy (CORE) leaves space for a tenth button.
What would you like?
The button need not be FreeBSD-specific. Discussions frequently attract users of other systems.
The sidebar of r/freebsd is crowded (very tall), and this cluster of buttons is relatively far down, so I doubt that it will gain much attention. Still, cafe community thoughts are welcome.
Three screenshots:
1. an overview of <https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/top/?sort=top&t=day> before removal of the TrueNAS button
2. the entire sidebar as represented at <https://sh.reddit.com/r/freebsd/about/>
3. focus on the other sub shortlist, and the other shortlist, within the sidebar.
Thanks.
Why for gods sake does it always have to be a pain getting this Linux stuff up and running on a real #unix like #solaris? But finally „bebbo‘s amiga-gcc“ runs on Solaris 11.4.81 CBE (x86) and produces executable #amiga code. Next step is getting it to work on #openindiana #sparc.
Howdy #everyone!
Time for an #introduction. I'm Pete, a #neurodivergent and #actuallyautistic #humanbeing who is enthusiastic about #technology especially #linux and #unix systems.
I've been on #Mastodon for a few years now and really enjoy it. After having many positive interactions with folks from the BSD Cafe, I recently joined this instance for tech-specific posts.
My "main" account on mastodon.social is for human rights, social issues, and politics.
I look forward to engaging discussions with you all!
