The current state of the web assumes that the reader is an adversary to be trapped and monetized.
When a news website forces you through three dismissive actions just to read a headline, they are burning your cognitive budget before delivering any value. You are greeted by a cookie banner taking up the bottom 30% of your screen, a "Subscribe!" modal dead center, an autoplaying video pinned to the corner and a prompt begging to send you push notifications.

English speakers of the fedi. In a software with the interface in English, Reading a menu with verbs such as Save, Open, Close, Edit, Format etc., do you read them as imperative (an order: "do this") or as an infinitive (the "base form" of the verb, like "to do this")?
Are you a native speaker or have English as a second language?

On a slightly more serious note, this can now be blamed on AI.
I made some good use of HappyCow.net to find a vegan meal in a hurry when traveling overseas. I've even used it sometimes when out and about around Aotearoa, where I'm more familiar with the options. But I'm trying to use it today and finding it somewhat awkward.
For one thing, tapping on a listing opens a new tab, then doesn't return to the list when I press the back button. Which is hardly a dealbreaker, but it's not great UX.

Like a lot over the last few years, I've been getting really into the idea of regressing to a simpler phone that's just a phone, and demoting my touchscreen to being a pocket tablet. Genuine question for designers and front-end devs:
When you start a new project, how do you handle components you've already built before? (navbars, forms, cards, footers...)
Do you:
- Copy from an old project?
- Rebuild from scratch?
- Use a component library?
- Something else?
Curious what the real workflow looks like. No wrong answers.
Rant time.
I've now seen this fucking dialog in Slack FOUR TIMES THIS MORNING and it's not even noon yet. And there doesn't seem to be any way to turn it off from settings.
There are so many problems with this dialog that make me so angry this morning.
1) This "only options are Yes or Later" in tech is infuriating. Treat me better and offer me an option to say NO to shit I don't care about.

Google’s new Pixel Weather icons use flat, high contrast outlines to make them more accessible - a departure from soft gradients. They pass the squint test much more clearly.

Been thinking more about how to introduce “design friction” to improve our online interactions. Mastodon has many, such as the lack of a quote-post function, that constrain virality. But, we lose the pro-social effects of virality, such as visibility into a conversation going on outside of our own “filter bubble.”

Who has a great about page for their personal website? I’m updating the content on andrewwoods.net, my personal website. My goal is to write an about page that would appeal to an employer, as well as a new friend.
What would you like to know about me?
My current about page url is https://andrewwoods.net/web-developer/ I named the page ‘web-developer' because the name `/about` was determined to be bad by an SEO tool.
Today I needed to show a simple #TUI counter, but in a way that it was easy to recognize how far the count is going. Then I remembered how my 6yo is being taught to count, sum and subtract. For instance, how many dots are/seconds elapsed?

OK, so previously, I complained about behavior related to populating the feed. I think I'd like to see some A/B testing on _holding_ the display update of the feed if the user is hovering over an actionable element.
I hate when the feed 'moves/updates/unfurls' when I'm clicking/hovering the boost/like/reply buttons. But... Really what I want is the time to decide if I want an action taken.
What unintended side-effects am I not considering?
